The Institute of Health Systems ia a nonprofit, autonomous health systems research institute founded in 1990, on the principle of multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary health systems research, application & services for public health. The IHS strives to build local capacity & the global knowledge base for better health systems and to improve public health. Activities include research, individual, institutional, & systemic capacity development for health systems strengthening.
The Institute is largely supported by project based funding and income from services provided by it. IHS services, activities and projects broadly fall into research, training and consultancy assignments. The Institute strives to maintain a balance between these three modes of learning and application to provide an environment for intellectual development, knowledge based work and at the same time keep the skill set of its faculty well grounded to realities of social services delivery in India and other developing countries. The Institute fosters a team of faculty from multiple disciplines, provides modern office facilities, knowledge based resources, and an enriched work environment.
The Institute is governed by a system of authorities consisting of the Board of Governors (BOG), the General Body (GB) and the Executive Council (EC). The General Body and the Board of Governors meet annually. The Executive Council oversees management of the Institute, appoints the Director and the Finance Officer. Office Bearers of the Institute consist of the Chairman and the President. The Chairman presides over the meetings of the Board of Governors and the General Body. The President chairs the Executive Council and, in the absence of the Chairman, the General Body. The Director presents a report (annual report) on the Institute’s activities to the General Body every year, along with the Audited accounts of the Institute. Programs and activities of the Institute are carried out by a team of faculty and staff lead by the Director, who is the chief academic and executive officer of the Institute. The Dean provides academic and technical leadership to the team of faculties, fellows and associates.
The IHS is registered as a charitable scientific institution under section 12A of the Income Tax Act. Contributions to IHS are eligible for exemption under section 80G of the Income Tax Act. The Institute is recognised by Government of India – Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. IHS is registered by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs as an entity (CSR00048944) for undertaking Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. The Institute is registered by the Government of India Ministry of Home Affairs under the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act.
