Public Health: Issues & Challenges 

The 91st Induction Training Program at the Lal Bahadur Shastry National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, was held on 02/12/2002. This induction training program was for State Civil Service Officers promoted to the IAS. Dr. Prasanta Mahapatra, Director, IHS made a presentation on "Public Health: Issues and Challenges" to the 14 participants, from various state cadres such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur-Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and the Union Territories. Many of the participants are occupying senior positions in District Administration, such as Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad, Deputy Commissioner, District Collector, Project Director DRDA. Many other participants are occupying state level positions such as Joint Secretary, Director, Additional Director, etc.

IHS Faculty provide training to DCO's on VA forms  
IHS Director, Dr. Prasanta Mahapatra and Faculty, Ms. Srilatha Sivalenka participated in the Director of Census Operations (DCO) Orientation Training Programme at GRT Grand Days Hotel, Chennai on 28/11/2002 and 29/11/2002. The programme was attended by the DCO's from all states, Dr. Banthia, Registrar General of India (RGI), and Mr. Sethi from the RGI. On 28/11/2002, Dr. Mahapatra taught the DCO's about the newly prepared Sample Registration Scheme - Cause of Death (SRS-COD) manual, and covered Forms 10B and 10C, in particular. The IHS is working with two states, namely Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, in the SRS-COD project to train SRS supervisors in Verbal Autopsy (VA) methodology.

Malaria Research Centre Silver Jubilee Symposium
The Malaria Research Centre (MRC) Delhi as part of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations conducted an "International Symposium on Challenges in Malaria and prospects for research" on 29 th October 2002 at New Delhi. Dr.Prasanta Mahapatra, Director IHS was invited to deliver a talk on the topic of" Prospects for Research in the Estimation of Disease Burden on account of Malaria in India". Dr.Mahapatra in his talk, outlined the conventional measures and Burden of Disease methods. Dr.Mahapatra also briefed the gathering about the components of the malaria burden and sources of mortality data onmalaria in the country and stressed the need for a better surveillance system and research in Cause of Death in hyper-endemic areas.

Health Intranet System Administration Course         

The CHISA course has successfully trained 4 batches of 25 students each. Topics such as hardware and networking essentials are covered. CHISA students will be able to independently build LANs, act as System Administrators, maintain Personal Computers, and fix common problems faced by PC users. The students are also exposed to WANs like IHSNET. Many CHISA graduates are now working in organisations as networking engineers, or have started their own businesses.         Click here for more details.

Healthcare Software Development Course  

The goals of IHS are to groom skills, gather evidence and generate knowledge. Asa part of its goal, IHS has started building skills in development of health information infrastructure. Till now it has conducted three Health Care Software Development (HCSD) courses and trained health care software professionals in EDI standards, HL7 messaging protocol, and code sets like HCPCS, LOINC, NDC, ICD-10,and CPT.

Director meets Union Minister for Health
On 31st July, 2002, IHS Director Dr. Prasanta Mahapatra met the Honourable Union Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Shri.Shatrughan Sinha. Dr. Mahapatra submitted a note on the "Pressing National Level Health System Issues". The Honourable Minister was apprised about the Institute and the new APH course.
US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invites IHS Faculty
The United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invited the IHS faculty Dr. Satish Kumar Kannappa, to participate in the Special workshop on "International Air Pollution and Energy Climate Policy Collaboration" held during the Joint 12th International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) and International Society for Exposure Analysis (ISEA) Conference" held at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada between August 11-15, 2002. IHS has been selected as the lead agency by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), for carrying out the "Health Effects Analysis & Economic Valuation of Health Effects" components of the Integrated Environmental Strategies (IES), India Project. This project is being taken up in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Training & Research Institute (EPTRI), Hyderabad.
